Drive shaft stuck on PTO shaft

I borrowed a friend's post pigsty digger and now I can't get the *** thing off my tractor. I had a hard fourth dimension connecting the drive shaft, I had to wack it with a 2x4 to get information technology on. Like an idiot, it never occured to me that if it was hard to go on it would be hard to get off. I've tapped it, I've heated it, I've pried and pulled and it hasn't moved more about 1/32". (Yes, I'm pushing the petty release push button.) Next stride volition be to detach the universal and try a wheel puller. If that doesn't work I guess I'll try to cut it off.Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.Maury jacobs

If you have access to a hydraulic ram (like a porta-power trade name - 4-10 ton) and tin can wedge it in somewhere, you certainly tin put enough strength on it to remove it. I have had expert luck that manner. ....

Before you lot try anything, like a portapower think about where you are directing the force. If this matter is really stuck, the portapower tin can do serious damage to the internal gears or bearings in the PTO. Too if the portapower is put directly to the casting on the tractor, it may crack or punch a hole in the casting if it is the weakest point. When you lot start applying lots of force idea is required, because the weakest point will requite and that may not be what you y'all are trying to get off. A good run of thumb on PTO shafts is that they must install by hand force only. If they won't find out why. ....

Hmm...the first thing that occurs to me would exist that the piffling release push button may not be doing its job. So that the locking pin or some metal from it is still laying in the channel perpendicular to the PTO splines.
The showtime thing that I would do is to figure that if the PTO sleeve manufacturer got that push button installed at that place in the first place so there must exist some way to get it out....along with the spring and metal cylinder that it operates. Because if that locking mechanism is still in place, no force on world is going to get that PTO sleeve off of the shaft.
Equally far as force goes, a wheel or gear puller will use as much force as should be needed....If that won't do it then forcefulness isn't the reply. It would be worth while to buy a three jaw or begetting-plate type gear puller simply because they pull in such a way that you won't hurt anything else regardless of how much force you put on the puller. In the past I have had the aforementioned trouble, usually when a bulldoze-shaft with a rusty coupler was installed on the pto shaft. The easiest mode (IMHO) to remove the offending coupler seems to be every bit follows. Commencement, 'dissever' the shaft into 2 parts and remove everything possible of the implement. Secondly (as Roger L. so rightly stated) remove the 'C-clip' (or whatever it is that holds the lock-pin in place) and tale the lock-pin and spring, etc., out of the tractor end of the drive-shaft. Thirdly, carefully accept a stout slice of rope (manilla, not nylon or polypropelene) and place two skid knots around the yoke such that you will be pulling equally from both sides. place the rope around the base of a skilful size tree (be sure to protect the bawl from harm with an old blanket or something). Finally, VERY GENTLY but firmly 'crash-land' the coupler, using the lowest gear possible, by pulling against the tree using short, quick tugs. Be very careful to brand certain that you stay in control at all times, avoid the temptation to 'let rip' and try to use speed, keep one foot covering the clutch at all times. If it is possible to utilize a tree on a gentle slope so that the tractor tin can be allowed to merely declension a brusk distance and the rope to stop it. Best of luck. ....

I agree that the locking pin should be removed. On my compact, If I press the release too hard information technology goes by and volition go on to lock. I simply pull on information technology while pressing the release. Sometimes it takes a few tries. I concluding thought. If simple tension won't work, tension plus a few raps with a hammer might. Particularly if yous don't accept a direct on pull. This is probably obvious just I thought I'd mention it. ....

Wow! It sure is amazing how easy things are when you lot have the right tool. I bought a 3-clamp gear puller and had the trouble solved in less than 15 minutes. It took about of that time to have the universal joint apart and put it dorsum together. I want to thank everyone for their help. I think the best piece of advice was "if it won't continue by manus, find out why" I'grand sure I'll remember that 1.

Once more, thanks - Maury ....
